Maurin Mitchell, Storm over Spain (1937)

Published in Issue 5 (September/October 2020), Letters, Volume 28

A chara,—Would any of your readers be able to help with biographical information about the life and work of the Irishwoman, Maurin Mitchell, who wrote Storm over Spain (1937), which was published in London by Secker and Warburg? This enquiry is on behalf of a friend, Prof. José Francisco Fernandez Sanchez, at the University of Almeria, who is in charge of Irish Studies there. His department has published a great many translations from Irish Studies into Spanish, including his own translations of Beckett’s short prose works. He also edits Estudios Irlandeses, an interdisciplinary journal with a very wide range of contributions from the Hispanic world. He has now decided to translate Mitchell’s narrative about the early days of the Spanish Civil War. He has the text but no context, and virtually no biographical information, beyond the simple fact that she was born in 1895. Any help with this project would be greatly appreciated, and would be acknowledged by Prof. Sanchez in due course. He can be contacted directly at jjfernan@ual.es—Yours etc.,
