Gunrunning

Dublin loyalists were undoubtedly engaged in gunrunning through the city. In 1964 a Mr Stokes of Cork wrote to the Irish Times expressing his surprise that in recent coverage remembering the Howth gunrunning (to the Irish Volunteers) the Dún Laoghaire gunrunning had not been mentioned. In a detailed account, Mr Stokes told the Times that hundreds of rifles and pistols were stored in his father’s house at Brighton Vale, Monkstown, in the weeks prior to the Howth operation. Military historian G. A. Hayes-McCoy attested to the validity of the claims. Stokes claimed that some guns went to the LDV but that most were taken north by members of the UVF.
