  • 1972 Pádraic Colum (90), poet, novelist, dramatist and leading figure of the Irish Literary Revival, died in Enfield, Connecticut.
  • 1970 Following disagreement over the issue of parliamentary abstention, Sinn Féin split into Official and Provisional Sinn Féin, mirroring the split in the IRA a month previously.
  • 1970 During its Ard-Fheis in Dublin Sinn Féin splits over the issue of participation in the parliaments at Leinster House, Stormont and Westminster. The result was the establishment of Official Sinn Féin and Provisional Sinn Féin.
  • 1729 Edmund Burke, orator and political philosopher, was born at 12 Arran Quay, Dublin, the son of a Protestant solicitor and a Catholic mother.
  • 1973 Ruairí Ó Brádaigh, president of Provisional Sinn Féin, was imprisoned for six months under the Offences Against the State Act for being a member of the IRA.
