Martin Haverty (1809–87), historian, journalist, writer

Published in Issue 3 (May/June 2021), Letters, Volume 29

Sir,—I’m doing some research on Martin Haverty, born in Rahoon, Co. Galway, in 1809. He was half-brother to Joseph P., the artist. He wrote a very detailed history of Ireland, based on the Annals of the Four Masters, in 1860, while resident in Kilbehy, Askeaton, Co. Limerick. He had bought Kilbehy in 1853—257 acres of the Royce estate—under the Encumbered Estates Act. This history was used in schools and colleges for many years afterward. He worked as a journalist on the Freeman’s Journal and was editor of Duffy’s Hibernian. He also worked with the London Chronicle. While I have found a transcription of his birth certificate, I can find no record of the family in Galway. One would imagine that a wealthy Catholic family in the west of Ireland would have left some mark. I would be grateful if any of your readers could shed any light on the matter.—Yours etc.,
