1873 James Cousins, writer and poet who taught at the Theosophical College in Madanapalle for over twenty years and latterly worked for the Indian government as an adviser on the arts, born in Belfast. He established the first public art galleries in India in Mysore and Travancore.
1946 The King David Hotel in Jerusalem, British administrative headquarters for Palestine, was bombed by the militant Zionist group Irgun; 91 people of various nationalities were killed.

Personal Histories is an initiative by History Ireland,
which aims to capture the individual histories of Irish
people both in Ireland and around the world. It is hoped
to build an extensive database reflecting Irish lives,
giving them a chance to be heard, remembered and to

1938 The Munich Agreement was signed by Germany, France, Italy and the United Kingdom. In return for a guarantee that it would be his last territorial demand in Europe, it allowed Hitler to annex Sudetenland, the mainly German-speaking portions of Czechoslovakia.
1760 Maria Gunning (27), countess of Coventry, died from cosmetic poisoning. She and her sister Elizabeth were celebrated beauties who married into the British aristocracy.
