James Chichester-Clark the forgotten Prime Minister

Published in Issue 1 (Spring 2001), News, News, Northern Ireland 1920 - present, Volume 9

Clive Scoular’s James Chichester-Clark, Prime Minister of Northern Ireland was launched on 12 December 2000 in Belfast’s recently refurbished Linen Hall Library. The author spoke of his pleasure at writing and publishing this first biography and of his gratitude to Lord Moyola (Major Chichester-Clark) and his family for their co-operation. In response Paul Bew (Queen’s, Belfast) said how important this title was in terms of filling a gap in the history of Northern Ireland and indicated that it was now time for historians to give more time and thought to writing about this period of Ireland’s history. With the recent debate stimulated by the release of 1970 Stormont cabinet papers during Chichester-Clark’s premiership, this book’s appearance is timely.
