The Irish in Europe 1600-1800: the other ‘Hidden Ireland’

This one-day conference, organised by the Irish in Europe 1600-1800Project at NUI Maynooth on Saturday 11 December 1999, is intended as ashowcase for ongoing research by new and established historians anaspects of the Irish emigration to Europe in the early modern period.The lectures, which focus largely on France and Spain, will present thefruits of recent archival research and attempts to contextualise IrishEuropean emigration as part of the modernisation of Ireland and itsevolution as part of the European system. Lectures explore theactivities and achievements of Irish people abroad, their contactnetworks in host countries and the contribution of these networks tolinking even the remotest parts of Ireland to the centres of Europeancultural, political and economic innovation.
