The Faerie Queene and all that

Yale Center for British Art, Pennsylvania State University and theSpenser Society of America will host an interdisciplinary symposium onThe Faerie Queene in the World, 1596-1996 on 27-28 September 1996. Theorganisers welcome papers on Spenser’s works and life, on violence andrebellion, on Reformation theology, on visual history and iconology, onthe history of political thought, on the poem and the theatre, onarchitectural theory and rhetoric, on Spenser and continental, medievalor classical culture, on colonial law and legal institutions, onsexuality, on the Munster plantation, on allegory, on ecclesiasticalcontroversy, on the colonial administrations of the 1580s and ‘90s, oniconoclasm, on intertextuality, imitation and poetic rivalry, ontreatises about Ireland, on moral philosophy, on Spenser and the
twenty-first century. Plenary lectures by Leonard Barkan, NicholasCanny, Andrew Hadfield and Willy Maley, Maureen Quilligan and SusanneWofford will alternate with panels, workshops and a roundtablediscussion.
