1969 The Sunday Press in Dublin reported a split in the IRA over the issue of contesting elections.
1972 A teenage boy and girl were killed and nine others were injured when a car bomb exploded in Belturbet, Co. Cavan.
1972 In one of three UVF bomb attacks in the Republic of Ireland that day, a teenage boy and a teenage girl were killed when a device left in a car exploded without warning in Belturbet, Co. Cavan. Nine others were injured.

2004 Bob Tisdall (96), Olympic gold medal-winner in the 400m hurdles (Los Angeles, 1932) in a world record time of 51.7 seconds—which was not recognised under the rules at the time because he had hit a hurdle—died.
1866 The SS Great Eastern completed the laying of a transatlantic telegraph cable between Valentia Island, Co. Kerry, and Heart’s Content, Newfoundland.
