Pierce O’Mahony

Published in 20th-century / Contemporary History, Issue 3 (Autumn 2003), Letters, Letters, Volume 11

Sir,—Congratulations on the Spring 2003 edition; I found it very interesting and liked the variety of the subjects. I was especially interested in D.R. O’Connor Lysaght’s article on Redmondism. I wonder if you can help identify the spectacle-wearing character in the cartoon from the Irish Worker. I think it might be Pierce O’Mahony. I would be very interested in your readers’ or the author’s opinion as I have a special interest in Pierce, having collaborated on the Bulgarian/Irish book Pierce O’Mahony, an Irishman in Bulgaria (summary at www.shortall.info/Mahony/pierce). Pierce probably has the unique distinction of having been honoured by Ferdinand I of Bulgaria (one of the Central Powers) and by the British Crown. If he has not already been profiled in HI, he might be an interesting subject for your readers.
