A conference to mark the start of the 6,000th anniversary year since the biblical creation will be held on 25, 26 and 27 October 1996 at Queen’s University’s new campus in Armagh.
The 6,000th anniversary year of the creation will commence on 22 October 1996, according to Ussher, a seventeenth century Archbishop of Armagh. Working from the bible Ussher dated all of the main biblical events including the creation. To mark the anniversary Queen’s University’s Institute of Continuing Education and Historic Monuments and Buildings Branch (Northern Ireland) are organising a weekend conference looking at Chronologies in Science and History.
Areas which will be considered will include chronology in astronomy, geology, archaeology and history. Topics will include the methodologies of dating, the linkages between the historical record and scientific dating techniques, and the philosophical questions associated with time and the past.
Contributors will include Mike Baillie and Gerry McCormick (Palaeoecology Dept., Queen’s), Richard Warner (Ulster Museum), Mark Bailey (Armagh Observatory), and Tom Mason (University of Natal).
The conference will be open to the general public and specialist knowledge is not required.
