Eamon Duffy is Reader in Church History and Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge and is best known as a historian of Catholicism and of English religion. Two of his recent books have become best-sellers, The Stripping of the Altars: traditional religion in England 1400-1580 (Yale 1992) and Saints and Sinners: a history of the popes (Yale 1997), the latter in conjunction with a TV documentary series. On a recent visit to Ireland he spoke to John McCafferty.
