Redmond family

John Redmond was the third Redmond to win a seat at Westminster, after his great-uncle and father, and was MP for Wexford constituencies (1881–91) and Waterford (1891–1918). Local loyalty to the former leader and his family continued to be a feature of political and even social life in Waterford after his death. Redmond’s son, Captain William, won his father’s Waterford seat at the subsequent by-election, and even retained it against Eamon de Valera in the December 1918 general election. He would later go on to represent Waterford in the Dáil until his death in 1932, when he was replaced by his widow, Bridget Redmond, who in turn held the seat until her passing in 1951.
