Celebration of the 400th anniversary of the foundation of St Anthony’s, the Irish Franciscan College, in Louvain.

Louvain 2007 is a celebration of the foundation by the IrishFranciscans of St Anthony’s College in Louvain, Belgium, in 1607. TheIrish College was founded under the patronage of the king of Spain andthe papacy, and became the focus of an energetic cultural and politicalproject that had a significant influence on Ireland’s relations withEurope, the writing of Irish history and the preservation of Ireland’srich cultural heritage. To mark the 400th anniversary of thefoundation, a series of events is being organised for 2007 both inLouvain and throughout Ireland. A summer school will be held in Louvainin May 2007, and throughout the year conferences will be held in theCatholic University of Louvain (KUL), the Dublin Institute ofTechnology (Conservatory of Music), NUI Galway, NUI Maynooth andUniversity College Dublin. Major exhibitions will be mounted, includingexhibitions in the National Museum of Ireland, Trinity College Library,Waterford Treasures and in Louvain itself. A full calendar of eventswill be launched in Autumn 2006.
