Don’t let the smiles fool you! ‘Master’ Tommy Graham (left) does his best to maintain order amidst the cut and thrust of debate at the latest History Ireland Hedge School at the National Library, Kildare Street, on 12 January 2011. He was joined (from left to right) by panelists Fearghal McGarry (QUB), Edward Madigan (TCD), Roisín Higgins (Boston College), Kevin Whelan (Notre Dame) and a very lively audience to debate the proposition ‘1916 and all that: how should the forthcoming centenaries (Home Rule, First World War and the 1916 Rising) be commemorated?’ Next up—also at the National Library, at 7pm on Tuesday 15 March 2011—is a discussion on ‘No God and two Saint Patricks: the national saint and the national holiday’. To avoid dissappointment make sure to book your seat (the 1916 one was booked out a week in advance!). The Hedge School then takes to the road with two on the 1641 Depositions, in Letterkenny (Saturday 16 April) and Derry (Sunday 17 April). Full details on forthcoming Hedge Schools on page 60.
